Energy Saving Tips
Now is the perfect time to take control of your energy costs. Listed below are a variety of energy conservation tips you can start following today.
Thermostat
- Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees during summer and 72 degrees during winter.
- While away at work or on a trip, adjust the thermostat five or ten degrees.
- Consider installing a programmable thermostat
Filters
- Clean or replace your filter at least once each season.
Ducts
- Check your duct system for leaks and repair with a sealant instead of tape.
- Repair any collapsed or loose sections of the duct system.
- Make sure all sections are insulated.
Coils
- Clean up the inside and outside coils to ensure proper air flow.
Tune-Up
- Have your system tuned-up by a professional once a year.
Ceiling Fans
- Use a ceiling fan to help air circulation
Water Heater Thermostat
- Lower your setting between 110 and 120 degrees.
- Add an insulation blanket around the outside of the tank.
Laundry/Kitchen/Bathroom
- Replace any leaky faucets or gaskets.
- Wash in cold water and save hot water costs.
- Keep the dryer filter clean.
- Sort clothes evenly for full loads and load to capacity, but don't overload.
- Use a microwave oven when possible; they use less energy and require less time
- Keep refrigerator/freezer doors closed, and keep as full as possible.
- Make sure door gaskets on refrigerator/freezer are tight.
- Wash only full loads in dishwasher.
- Take short showers.
- Install a water-saver showerhead.
- Don't let the hot water tap run unnecessarily while you wash, shave, or brush your teeth.
Lights
- Turn them off when leaving a room.
- Use lower wattage and compact fluorescent bulbs where possible.
Other
- Keep the chimney damper closed when the fireplace is not in use.
- Caulk and weather strip around all doors, windows and other openings.
- Insulate wherever needed.
- Make sure your attic is ventilated properly.
